NHAI
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is an autonomous agency of the government of India that is responsible for the development, maintenance, and management of the national highways network in the country. Established in 1988 under the National Highways Authority of India Act, NHAI operates under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. It plays a pivotal role in constructing, improving, and maintaining India’s highways, which form the backbone of the nation’s road transport system.

Major Projects
- Golden Quadrilateral: One of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in India, the Golden Quadrilateral connects Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata, covering a total distance of 5,846 kilometers. It has significantly improved connectivity between the country’s major economic hubs.
- North-South and East-West Corridors: These corridors aim to connect Srinagar in the north to Kanyakumari in the south and Silchar in the east to Porbandar in the west. The project covers approximately 7,300 kilometers and enhances the transportation network across the length and breadth of India.
- Bharatmala Pariyojana: Launched in 2017, this project aims to develop 34,800 kilometers of highways. It focuses on optimizing the efficiency of freight and passenger movement across the country by bridging critical infrastructure gaps.
Notable Achievements
- World Record in Road Construction: NHAI set a Guinness World Record by constructing 25.54 kilometers of the four-lane concrete road in a single day between Amravati and Akola in Maharashtra.
- Enhanced Road Safety: Implementing advanced road safety measures, including intelligent traffic systems, highway patrolling, and emergency response systems, has significantly reduced the number of road accidents on national highways.
- Digital Initiatives: NHAI has introduced several digital solutions like FASTag for toll collection, an online portal for project management, and the INAM-Pro platform for material procurement, enhancing transparency and efficiency.

Policies and Guidelines

- Public-Private Partnership (PPP): NHAI promotes the involvement of private sector players through various PPP models, such as Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) and Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), to expedite highway development.
