Entertainment Desk, New Delhi: The first season of Mirzapur premiered on Prime Video in 2018. The second season was released in 2020 after a two-year wait, and now, after a long four-year wait, the third season has been streamed on Friday. But does this season live up to the long wait? Does it fulfil the high expectations set by Guddu Pandit and Kaleen Bhaiya?
To keep the excitement alive in any show, the story must flow naturally. Even though the events are a product of the writer’s imagination, they shouldn’t feel artificial. While watching the third season of Mirzapur, some moments feel like they were written to deal with a specific character, whereas the story could have flowed differently.
The third season of this highly talked-about crime series is darker and more violent than the first two seasons, but this violence doesn’t entertain. Some unexpected events do shock, and this is perhaps the most significant achievement of the third season.
What is the Story of the Third Season?
The third season picks up where the second season left off. After killing Munna (Divyendu) and Kaleen Bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi), Guddu (Ali Fazal) has made the Tripathi residence his home. Golu Gupta (Shweta Tripathi) makes all significant decisions. She still can’t believe Kaleen Bhaiya is dead and continues to search for him.
Whoever sits on the throne of Mirzapur will rule over the opium, illegal weapons, and other black market dealings in Purvanchal. However, Guddu will have to earn this throne.
Standing between Guddu and the throne of Mirzapur is Sharad Shukla (Anjum Sharma), the strongman of Jaunpur, who has played his most significant role by saving Kaleen Bhaiya’s life.
Chief Minister Madhuri Yadav (Isha Talwar) wants to eradicate strongmen to make the state fear-free and intends to start with Guddu for apparent reasons. Meanwhile, Guddu’s father, Ramakant Pandit (Rajesh Tailang), is in jail for killing SSP Maurya to save Guddu’s life.
Principled Ramakant considers himself guilty and wants to serve his sentence without fighting his case, but the family pressures him to fight, as he shoots SSP to save Guddu from an encounter.
Taking advantage of the situation, Dadda Tyagi’s (Lilliput) son, Shatrughan Tyagi (Vijay Varma), takes the place of his twin brother Bharat to gain his father’s favour. The story of Mirzapur’s third season progresses with ups and downs among these characters.
How is the Screenplay of the Third Season?
The season consists of 10 episodes, each averaging 50 minutes. Apurva Dhar Badgaiyan wrote the show, which Gurmeet Singh and Anand Iyer directed. The first episode begins with Munna’s funeral, marking the end of the show’s humour.
In the initial five episodes, the story revolves around meetings and tensions among strongmen over the throne of Mirzapur. Kaleen Bhaiya is troubled more by internal wounds than external ones.
However, no one is ready to accept his final absence. Western strongmen want to take advantage of this uncertainty in Purvanchal and establish their dominance through Munawwar.
The third season’s story primarily focuses on Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu Pandit, Golu Gupta, Madhuri Yadav, and Sharad Shukla. After the fifth episode, the pace picks up, and the story gets interesting. Golu Gupta, who went to Sivan to finish off Kaleen Bhaiya, is captured by Chhote.
Golu’s sudden disappearance leaves Guddu alone once again. As Madhuri Yadav and Sharad Shukla grow closer, Guddu’s troubles increase. Kaleen Bhaiya, under Sharad’s favour, promises to put him on the throne of Mirzapur. However, by the time Kaleen Bhaiya’s old edge returns, the show’s last episode arrives.
The third season is more ‘Guddu Pandit versus Guddu Pandit‘ than ‘Kaleen Bhaiya versus Guddu Pandit,‘ as Guddu’s unpredictability gives the story shocking turns that shouldn’t be revealed here. Due to too many subplots, some characters feel incomplete and left out.
How is the Acting of the Cast?
The actors’ performances are excellent. Guddu’s madness is even fiercer this season, and Ali Fazal has successfully portrayed this aspect of the character. From Guddu’s body language to his speaking or reaction in specific situations, Ali’s acting consistency is exemplary.
Ali has beautifully presented the nuances of the character’s mental state. A prime example is the scene where CM Madhuri Yadav visits him in jail, and he carelessly rubs his nose against the bars while talking.
In the third season, Kaleen Bhaiya’s character feels defeated, and returns with his old edge, and Pankaj successfully portrays this transformation.
Shweta Tripathi’s character, Golu Gupta, has received good scenes this season, which she has utilized well. Other actors, including Anjum Sharma, Isha Talwar, Vijay Varma, Rasika Dugal, Sheeba Chaddha, Harshita Gaur, Priyanshu Painyuli, Manu Rishi, and Meghna Malik, have lived up to their characters.
Gurmeet Singh and Anand Iyer have not hesitated to make the scenes brutal and violent. Guddu and Golu’s union and Kaleen Bhaiya’s return keep the possibility of a fourth season alive. However, the biggest question is what direction the story will take, especially due to the twist in Kaleen Bhaiya’s character in the last episode, which closes some storylines.
